This year, together with our partners, we are offering two very special  events.  The first provides  a chance to discover the butterflies , birds and flowers of the alpujarra with a real expert, this organised by the specialist group Nature Trek. RESTAURANTE LAS CHIMENEAS

Next to Casa Las Chimeneas stands the newly restored Restaurant Las Chimeneas, where breakfast and evening meals are served. The dining room is a truly wonderful place to enjoy an intimate meal in the winter months or a cool beer after a long day's walking . Olive logs burn in the cast-iron stove through the winter, and the terrace provides uninterrupted views over the surrounding mountain ranges and on to the Meditteranean in the distance.

Breakfast is a combination of orange juice, yoghurts, fresh fruit , freshly baked local and / or home made bread and jam with produce from our own organic farm. Depending on the season you can expect to enjoy fresh oranges, cherries, plums, apples, figs and grapes all picked off our own trees. Breakfast is also a time for planning as David or Emma discuss possible routes or the day's activities with guests. Linger over a pot of coffee as you savour the possibilities for the day.

The evening meal is served in the small dining room where the very best of Alpujarran food is cooked by the ever-smiling Soledad, with whom we have worked with for many years. It has been a pleasure to exchange recipes handed down over the generations by Alpujarran families as well as introduce her to the flavours of North Africa in a delightful fusion of Andalucian and Morroccan food. If you are interested we are happy to let guests see her at work, whether it is to learn the secrets of marinading your own olives or preparing the locally dried peppers and tomatoes for a delicious soup. At certain times of year we hold dedicated cookery weeks with demonstrations from other guest chefs. Sam Clark, for example, writer of the acclaimed Moro cook books and owner of the successful London restaurant of the same name, will be holding a workshop the first weekend of October 2009. (Contact us for more details) We also include a delightful morning of "foraging" with Juan (known locally as el furtivo, or the poacher!) sourcing fresh thyme, fennel, fresh shoots of asparagus and mushrooms growing around the village which we then bring back for use later that day. It is fascinating to hear him discuss how the villager traditionally uses certain roots and leaves for medicinal purposes. Carmen is also at hand for a morning's demonstration of how to make local cheese and soap.

Sample menu: Ajo blanco - a local dish of almond and garlic soup, Roasted red pepper with anchovies and herbs, Spinach and goat's cheese crepe, Lamb cutlets served in a cherry sauce, Sea bream served with an almond sauce, Chicken breast in a fresh ginger sauce, Local fig cake with chocolate coating and homemade brandy cherries, Local almond meringues and strawberries, Pan de calatrava - an Alpujarran crème caramel,

Over the last few years Alpujarran wine has really taken off, with new organic vineyards springing up and offering excellent red and white wines as well as local Cava. We serve some of the best wines from the heart of the wine producing area of the Alpujarra and Laujar , as well as the award winning wines of Juan from Bodega Buenavista in the market town of Ugijar.
